Man accused of running illegal loans firm

A Nelson man has appeared before Pennine magistrates, accused of running an illegal loans business.

Dean Hughes (46), of Barkerhouse Road, is alleged by the prosecution to have been lending money unlawfully to “vulnerable people” in the Pendle and Burnley areas.

Hughes is accused of engaging in an activity providing unlicensed loans for which a licence was required, when not a licensee, on or between October 15th, 2012 and April 5th of last year. He is also charged with contravening a general prohibition by providing unlicensed loans, on or between April 6th, 2014 and March 3rd of this year. The defendant denied both allegations.

His case will be heard at the crown court and he was remanded in custody until March 26th.
