Lexi wins Great British Pie Week contest

Pastry was most definitely on the menu last week, as sustainable food business Roaming Roosters pulled out all the stops to celebrate Great British Pie Week.

Throughout the week, the company ran a competition for children to design their own pie and the most delicious sounding was then made up by farm shop manager George Cropper, and presented to the lucky winner.

“The journey from farm to fork is important to us here at Roosters, and we’re keen to educate people on the process of making the food and the ingredients we use,” said George.

“Pies are a national favourite, even for young children, so we thought it’d be a great idea to design their own. We had some very random, interesting entries, with beans and chocolate being a personal favourite, but the meat won over in the end!”

The overall winner of the pie competition was Lexi Shaw, aged 5, of Sacred Heart Primary School in Colne. Her first prize pie was a combination of grass fed diced lamb, minty gravy and mixed vegetables; a surprisingly sensible combination.

George crafted and produced Lexi’s pie according to her exact instructions, and Lexi, along with her family, were invited to Roaming Roosters in Higham to collect her winning pie from the farm shop.

Jordanna Shaw, Lexi’s mum, said: “I was delighted when I received the phone call to tell us Lexi had won.

“We’re regular customers at Roaming Roosters, so we love to get involved in any competitions and activities that they run. The food is always great but we’re particularly excited to taste Lexi’s pie!”
