Landmark gasholder to vanish

The gasholder on Oswald Street, which can be seen from the M65 motorway, has been disconnected from the gas network since 2006.

It is hoped that by removing the holder, the site can be put to beneficial use at some point in the future.

Over the next few weeks KDC Contractors Limited, working on behalf of National Grid, will set up on site.

Perimeter fencing and signage around the gasholder will be erected.

Work to remove water from the gasholder and dismantle it section by section will start from early August.

National Grid expects this work to be complete by the end of the year and hope to have contractors off site by early 2017.

National Grid land regeneration manager Samantha Rendell said: “The gasholder has become a regular feature at Oswald Street, but it’s been several years since the gasholders were last used, and our work is the next step in clearing up this redundant site.

“Although there are no specific plans for the site at the moment, we hope that by doing this work the site can be put to better use in the future.

National Grid representatives will be at Burnley College, Room C304 in Princess Way, on Monday from 4pm to 7pm to answer any questions about the Oswald Street gasholder.
