Landlord fined £1,000 for Burnley Wood rubbish mess

Burnley Borough Council took the Usmaniyah Corporation to court as part of a legal blitz on firms and individuals responsible for making the town a dirty disgrace.

It was the firm’s fifth filth offence. In addition to the fine, magistrates also imposed a further order of £1,272 in costs and compensation. The prosecution against the Usmaniyah Corporation was one of 15 brought by the council in the past fortnight.

Dirty back yards led to 10 convictions and resulted in fines totalling £4,875 with costs and compensation amounting to £1,614. Seven of the prosecutions related to the Burnley Wood area. The decision to go to court was part of the council’s fight to tackle fly-tipping, littering and dog fouling across the borough. Last year it was named as the fourth best in the country for bringing prosecutions. Burnley has a dedicated team which prosecutes the “mindless minority” who spoil the borough.

Coun. Neil Mottershead, the council’s Executive member for community safety, said: “We know people want us to tackle littering, fly-tipping and dog fouling, because they spoil our neighbourhoods, and that’s exactly what the council is doing.”

Two Burnley women were among those named and shamed at Reedley Magistrates’ Court for having dirty back yards.

Kirsty Lloyd (21), of Bar Street, and Susan McGrath (51), of Albert Street, were each fined £525 with £210 costs. Lloyd was ordered to pay and £83.06 in compensation and McGrath £63.44. Two men were each fined £100 with £75 costs for not cleaning up after their dogs. Robert Macintosh (19), of St Matthew Street, Burnley, was prosecuted for dog fouling in Scott Park, and Ben Suddericke (38), of Hollingreave Road, Burnley, for dog fouling in Glebe Street.

David Kelly (35), of Parkinson Street, Burnley, was fined £100 with £75 costs for littering in Branch Road.
