After being diagnosed at just three months old, undergoing numerous operations and spending her first eight Christmases in hospital, 25-year-old Keeley Fenn says she is beginning to enjoy life without constant pain.

And it is all down to an operation in the Royal Blackburn Hospital in December which saved her life when her condition had begun to deteriorate so much her family thought they were going to lose her. Former Walshaw High School pupil Keeley, who grew up in the Accrington Road and Coal Clough Lane area, can now enjoy life with her partner Rick and daughters Rosina (4) and Sophie (2).

Her mother Ann Metcalfe of Vine Street, Brierfield, said her daughter had suffered all her life. “She literally had to crawl on her hands and knees to change her babies’ nappies because she was in so much pain at times.

“She has been in and out of hospital all her life suffering from kidney stones and has had lots and lots of them removed, but for the past year had been constantly ill as the stones were blocking her kidneys and we really thought we were going to lose her. But after the operation she has got a new lease of life. She will be on medication all her life, but it was like she was really listened to for the first time. The staff were wonderful.”

The family now want to thank the Ward C22 staff by raising £1,000 for other patients and also raise awareness of the prevalence of kidney failure in young adults.

Ann and her partner Errol Shaw have organised a concert at Paradise Working Men’s Club, Martin Street, on February 10th, with top acts, supper donated by Bombay Lounge in Barrowford, and MCs Tim Littlechild and Helen Wakefield from 2BR. Tickets are £2 from Ann on 07850 178750.
