Jealous partner climbs onto girlfriend's roof after leaving series of phone messages

A jealous ex-steel erector climbed onto the roof at his "on-and-off" girlfriend's home and scared her after leaving phone messages "about who she had been having sex with," a court heard.

Burnley magistrates heard how Joel Howard, who his girlfriend described as having been "quite aggressive" towards her, had repeatedly tried to contact her.

Howard started to smash up a washing machine which was outside the Barnoldswick property and also garden ornaments belonging to his girlfriend's mother in the early hours incident on May 21st.

The 28-year-old defendant, of Wentcliffe Drive in Earby, admitted criminal damage. Howard was given a 12-month conditional discharge and must pay £85 costs, £100 compensation, and a £20 victim surcharge.

Prosecutor Mr Matthew Siddall said: "Police have to be called because [his girlfriend] was so scared. It's a protracted incident."

Mr Siddall continued: "The defendant made full admissions in interview. He fully admitted causing the damage and said he was very, very sorry for what had taken place."

The defendant, who was not represented by a solicitor, told the hearing he had got worked up about something and had been in the wrong.

Howard, who said he had the offer of a job in Sydney, said he had bought his girlfriend's mum a new washing machine and the old one had been in the back yard.

The defendant added: "The day after, I was back with [my girlfriend] and I'm still with her to this day."
