Inquest into death of care home woman opened

AN INQUEST into the death of a 91-year-old woman who died after falling ill in a Burnley care home has been opened and adjourned this morning.

Ethel Atkinson, born on November 2nd 1921, died at Royal Blackburn Hospital on June 4th at 7-22pm.

A post-mortem examination was carried out at Royal Blackburn Hospital, where Dr Charles Wilson listed the initial cause of death as “sigmoid colon volvulus”.

The case has been adjourned, while the coroner awaits further toxicology results.

Further investigations are being made at Palatine Lodge care home, which has been temporarily closed.
