‘Illegal immigrant’ admits having sex with woman in Burnley canal rape case

Nizam Ahmed (38), of no fixed address, told officers he was “absolutely clear” he had not been unfaithful.

But in later interviews, after DNA evidence was put to him, he spoke of having sex with one of the young women, with her agreement. He accepted having kissed and cuddled the other, and touching her.

Ahmed is on trial at Preston Crown Court where he denies one charge of attempted rape relating to August last year, and another charge of rape the following month.

The prosecution claims he had engaged both of his alleged victims, one 18 and the other 22, in conversation before grabbing them around the throats and dragging them to a secluded spot. Both were street workers or prostitutes.

Ahmed was interviewed seven times by police. After being told about the DNA he said of one of the women: “I didn’t rape her as far as I can remember. The girl wanted money. Because I wouldn’t pay her, she probably made a complaint.”

He went on to say they had had a row over money, but that she had consented to sex. He insisted that no force had been involved.

Regarding the attempted rape, he said that a young woman had taken a cigarette from him. They cuddled and he had asked her to go and have some fun. He said she agreed.

The court was told Ahmed comes from Bangladesh. He has no convictions in this country and has no right to remain here.
