Hundreds of Burnley people who first united two weeks ago to search for a missing teenager stood shoulder to shoulder in grief this morning at his funeral.

Crowds of mourners flocked to St Catherine’s Church and lined Todmorden Road as caring, fun-loving Declan Edwards (16), who had an “infectious smile,” was laid to rest.

There was standing room only in the church and loudspeakers relayed the emotional service to those outside as people of all ages, touched by Declan’s death, queued up to pay their respects.

Many of them wearing Declan’s favourite colour blue, fellow students from Unity College, where he was predicted to get excellent GCSE results this summer, turned out to show solidarity with his family, while Unity headteacher Mrs Sally Cryer led the tributes in church and gave a moving eulogy to the 6ft. 1in. Clarets fan.
