Highways chiefs have made the bridge safe and are preparing to carry out repairs.

David Hurford, Lancashire County Council bridges design and construction manager, said: “We received a report that Sabden Bridge had been struck by a vehicle on Friday night and attended immediately to put barriers in place for safety. We’re due to replace these plastic barriers with concrete ones later this week.

“We will also retrieve the stone that has been dislodged into the river, which we hope to be able to replace when we make the repairs. We’ll carry out a full assessment of the damage soon so we know what needs to be done and can schedule the repairs.”
