Mr Ian McCann (58) went on the two-week cycling holiday despite having the request turned down by governors at Rosewood Primary School in Rosewood Avenue.

It is believed after the request was denied he handed in a sick note saying he was stressed and proceeded with the holiday, which caused him to miss the last week of term.

The school confirmed a member of staff had been suspended but refused to comment further.

Mrs Alex Bird, chairman of governors at the school, said: “I can confirm that a member of staff has been suspended. However, as the matter is subject to investigation we will not be commenting further at this time.”
