Have you got what it takes to be a Samaritan volunteer?

Pendle, Burnley, Craven and Rossendale Samaritans are holding a Volunteers’ Discovery Day on Sunday so people can find out.

Everyone has it in them to be a Samaritans volunteer.

And local organisers are looking for local community volunteers to support people who might not have anywhere else to turn.

Based in Market Square, Nelson, the branch currently has almost 100 volunteers, but they are always looking to recruit more people to ensure they can continue to offer the service to the local community.

Volunteers who are able to cover Night Owl slots between 10pm and 8am are especially welcome.

Samaritans offers round-the-clock emotional support for those finding it difficult to cope, for whatever reason.

They are there for anyone feeling down, depressed, anxious or unhappy or who may be feeling suicidal or have feelings of despair leading to suicidal thoughts.

The confidential service is offered by phone, email, text, letter and face-to-face. 
Sue Fetigan, Samaritans branch director, said: “As Listening Volunteers, we are here to offer emotional support to callers by whatever means they choose to contact us.

“Our Support Volunteers also do an invaluable job of helping to keep our branch open by providing administrative, IT and publicity support – or organising fund-raising activities for the branch.

“By working together to support people struggling to cope, our branch is a rewarding place to spend time. Not only do we offer expert training but we get together for social activities, too!”

Volunteer Alan added: “Volunteering with Samaritans was one of the best decisions I ever made.

“I received extensive training, ongoing support and really valued having a mentor to guide me. We listen, and everybody has that skill from any walk of life.

“It’s an amazing opportunity for personal development and growth too, as well as helping others who need someone to listen at a time in their life when they need support.”

Pendle, Burnley, Craven and Rossendale Samaritans are hosting their Volunteers’ Discovery Day on Sunday at 15 Market Square, Nelson, from 10-30am to 12-30pm.

The event will provide an overview of what it’s like to be a Samaritans volunteer. Sue said: “If you can spare a couple of hours, please come along – we welcome and value every volunteer.

“Samaritans volunteers help to change people’s lives – being a Samaritan could change yours, too.”
