Hat trick award for enterprising Burnley school

To achieve Green Flag status, schools have to carry out projects on Eco-School topics such as energy, litter, waste, transport, water, healthy eating and more.

It involves an action plan, the setting up of an eco-committee, mainly run by students, adopting the eco-code as well as involving the community and all their work is assessed and passed by the Eco-Schools team.

St Augustine's achieved bronze and silver eco-school awards on their journey to being named a Green Flag school for the first time in 2014.

St Augustine's was granted Green Flag status a second time in 2016 and it’s just been renewed again.

Eco-Schools is a global programme empowering children to drive change and improve their environment awareness.

“Pupils at St Augustine's are always encouraged to think about their environment in their behaviour and in the school's curriculum,” said head teacher Sinead Colbeck.

“They are inspired to recycle, to think about water usage and they plant and grow items despite having no grass!

“Getting the Green Flag status for the third time is a huge honour and credit to the hard work of teachers and pupils at the school.”

St Augustine's won the Sustainable School award at the recent East Lancashire Newspaper Education Awards.
