Funeral of tragic Padiham baby Layla-Mai

HUNDREDS of mourners flocked to a Padiham church yesterday to say goodbye to a baby girl who died in her sleep, aged four-and-half-months.

The parents of Layla-Mai O’Malley-Shearer, Georgina O’Malley and Andrew Shearer, were supported by friends and family as they paid tribute to their “happy, smiling” daughter at St John’s Church.

As Layla-Mai’s tiny white coffin was brought into the packed church, the words of Ed Sheeran’s “Small Bump” played out.

Fr Alan Swift said: “It’s good to see so many people here today to give their support and pray for the family and Layla-Mai.”

He said the little girl had gone to “the best nursery in the universe.”

Paying tribute to her daughter, Georgina said: “I miss you so much. You were the best thing that ever happened to me.” Dad Andrew said even though she was so young, her personality shone through.

An event at Koko’s last weekend raised £4,000 for a memorial fund for Layla-Mai with more than 150 people turning out to make a donation.
