Former hostage to speak at West Craven gala dinner for Emmaus

TERRY WAITE, a humanitarian who was held hostage in Beirut for four years, will be guest of honour at a Barnoldswick gala dinner at the end of the month.

The dinner, in aid of the homelessness charity Emmaus, will be hosted by Rolls-Royce Leisure.

Emmaus offers homeless people a community to live in, to work and regain self-respect.

As well as the work of the Burnley-based charity, Mr Waite will also talk about his own experiences and time in captivity.

MC for the evening is comedian Steve Tandy and there will also be live entertainment from swing singer Paul Pashley.

Tickets for the event on March 30th are £30, which includes a welcome drink and canapes, followed by a three-course meal.

Mr Waite said: “I support Emmaus fully as it does not patronise homeless people. It requires that all those who enter an Emmaus community must leave State support behind and work according to their capacity.”

Ian Burgess, Head of Manufacturing Services at Rolls-Royce Barnoldswick, said: “When Terry Waite visited the plant 18 months ago he took great pleasure in meeting a cross section of the workforce, so we are particularly pleased to be able to support a charity close to his heart”.

Catherine Oldfield, Rolls-Royce Leisure Manager said: “The evening promises to be enlightening and entertaining.

“Terry is an inspirational speaker and Paul Pashley, who has had songs written for him by Gary Barlow and Bryan Adams, is an up and coming star who was even flown out to Italy by Wayne Rooney to sing at his wedding.”
