A former Burnley teacher, local historian and stalwart of the community has died at the age of 86.

Miss Edith Corner died at her home in Burnley Wood on Tuesday morning. She taught generations of Burnley children over a career spanning years as head of geography at the former Ivy Bank High School.

She had a keen interest in local history and was still running classes on the subject at Sion Baptist Church.

Miss Corner, with her twin sister Mary, who died in 2008 at the age of 82, was an active member of the Girl Guide movement and was a leader for St Stephen’s Guides.

Miss Corner’s cousin, Miss Judeth Davies, said: “Edith was very intelligent, she was interesting, kind and helpful, she had lots of interests and she lived a full and active life. Whatever she did she gave 100%.”

Miss Corner was also chairman of the Friends of St Peter’s group and had many friends at the church.

Her funeral will take place next Thursday at St Peter’s Church at 1pm followed by cremation at Burnley Crematorium.
