Former Burnley Mayoress dies in Spain

TRIBUTES have been paid to a former Burnley mayoress and respected ex-councillor who died after suffering a suspected heart attack at her Spanish home.

Mrs Pat Chadwick (63) died in Alhaurin el Grande, near Malaga.

She served on Burnley Council between 1995 and 2002 before emigrating to Southern Spain with her husband Bob, a former councillor, eight years ago.

Mrs Chadwick was Mayoress of Burnley for the Millennium celebrations in 2000 when Eddie Fisk was Mayor and was a well-liked figure on the council.

She was elected to serve as a Labour councillor for Lanehead in 1995 but three years later quit the Labour group over a housing issue and joined her husband as an Independent.

In May 2000 she was re-elected as an Independent councillor in the Queensgate Ward until she retired in 2002.

Following her retirement from the council Mr and Mrs Chadwick, who had been married for 30 years, left their sandwich shop in Parliament Street and emigrated to Spain.

The retiring Mayor and Mayoress Coun. Tony and Mrs Brenda Lambert were friends of the Chadwicks for 30 years. Coun. Lambert said: “In 1980 they bought a caravan next to ours and we became friends. Over the years we used to go for meals at each other’s homes. Pat was a strong-willed lady but very kind and helpful. She was a good councillor, she was well thought of.”

A Burnley council spokesman said: “Although it has been a few years since Pat was a councillor, she will be sadly missed by all of those councillors and officers who knew and worked with her over the years. Pat was admired by all who knew her.”
