According to Lancashire Police, a series of incidents began when a double decker bus had a fuel spillage across the road as it travelled northbound between the Tickled Trout and Broughton.

This led to a Fiat 500 losing control and crashing into the near side barrier, before a Ford Fiesta stopped to assist the Fiat on the hard shoulder. A Renault Megane then also lost control on the fuelled covered road and collided into the stationary Ford Fiesta before spinning into the third lane and colliding with another vehicle.

The five-year-old was a passenger in the Ford Fiesta and suffered “serious but not life threatening injuries” say police.

There were several other casualties taken to hospital by road ambulances.

Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service said firefighters from Bamber Bridge and Preston attended the scene and assisted paramedics, the police and Highways Agency to make the scene safe, spending around an hour at the site of the incident.

In another incident on the northbound carriageway, shortly before 7.30pm, firefighters were called by paramedics to the scene of a collision involving a vehicle which had collided with the central reservation between junction 30 and 31.

One female casualty was reported trapped, however when crews arrived at the scene the casualty was already out of the vehicle.

Crews assisted Traffic Control Officers in moving the vehicle over to the hard shoulder. The diesel spillage was the cause of the incidents, say police.

The motorway has since reopened, NW motorway police reported on Twitter this morning that J31A north exit of the M6 will be closed all day, as well as lane one of the M6 from J31-J31A for resurfacing.

The incident still seems to be causing tailbacks in various locations around Preston and anyone travelling is advised to check their journey before setting off.
