FIVE men were arrested after an alcohol-fuelled brawl broke out between rival groups in South-West Burnley.

Bottles were thrown and several people had to be taken to hospital following the flare-up of violence on wasteland at the junction of Cog Lane and Accrington Road around 10-30 p.m. on Good Friday.

Police said they are keen to find out what started the fracas, involving around 15 men, and are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

They sealed off a section of the area, close to the new Farm Foods store and Woodtop Inn, as part of the investigation and arrested five men on suspicion of violent disorder.

The injured men were treated at the Royal Blackburn hospital for cuts and bruises but were later discharged.

Det. Insp. Derry Crorken, from Burnley CID, said the incident happened after a night out.
