Firms feel impact of Burnley flyover roadworks

And the situation has not been helped by the fact that the planned completion date for the essential work has now been moved back from December 18th, to February 12th next year.

The manager of Jewson’s Burnley branch, Mr Shaun Brennan, told the Express that the work is having a small effect on collections and deliveries, but the branch is operating as usual.

He said: “Specific timed deliveries have been affected, especially around peak times due to traffic congestion in both directions.

“The morning and evening rush hours, combined with school closing times are the worst. We are waiting to see what happens when the work switches carriageways over to the Tesco side. Also, increased traffic at Christmas could have an effect.”

The Centenary Way work is described as ‘vital to extend the life of the bridge’.

The flyover was built in 1967 and the current project involves replacing and renewing parts of the structure, including load-bearing joints.

Contractors have found that the concrete deck is in a much worse condition than first thought and this has led to significant extra work being needed, which in turn has pushed back the completion date.
