Firefighters spent three hours tackling a grass fire at a Burnley beauty spot today.

Two pumps were called out to Hurstwood Reservoir at approximately 9-30am to reports of a blaze on an area of open grassland.

The two crews were at the scene until lunchtime when they were confident the fire totalling 100sq. m. was fully extinguished.

It is not known what caused the grass to ignite but dry ground and breezy conditions helped the spread of the flames.

With dry, warm weather forecast to continue this week, Crew Manager Alan Ashworth from Burnley Fire Station has issued a reminder to members of the public to take extra care, especially when disposing of cigarette butts.

He said: “We’re not sure exactly what caused it, it could have been anything.

“But I would like to take the opportunity to just remind people to be careful during this dry spell when discarding things like used cigarettes.”
