More empty houses in Burnley are set to be brought back into use.

Councillors are being asked to approve the compulsory purchase of a number of empty houses in Burnley at a meeting of Burnley Council’s Executive on Tuesday, July 15th.

The report asks for a green light to CPO a total of 15 properties in Rossendale Road, Healey Mount, Padiham Road, Russell Terrace, Cleaver Street, Oxford Road, Piccadilly Road, Brush Street, Green Street and Milner Street.

The purchases would be carried out under the council’s vacant property initiative (VPI) which sees houses which have been empty for a number of years bought, refurbished and then either sold or leased to housing association Calico for renting.

Coun. John Harbour, executive member for housing and environment, said: “Bringing empty houses back into use is important. If we don’t step in like this these empty properties will continue to deteriorate and attract anti-social behaviour which affects the whole neighbourhood. Council officers are working hard on initiatives like this that help improve communities across our borough.”
