East Lancs hit by 70mph gales

Drivers and pedestrians have endured dangerous driving conditions as high winds buffeted East Lancashire.

Motorists on the M65 and major routes around the region have been hit by winter storms as winds reached up to 70mph.

High winds and heavy rain have battered the county overnight and throughout the morning as severe weather warnings were issued by forecasters.

Speed restrictions of 50mph were imposed on part of the M6 in Lancashire earlier this morning.

Drivers throughout the North-West have been warned to remain vigilant as strong westerly gusts sweep across the region.

The Highways Agency was advising motorists take caution after dealing with nine over-turned lorries at locations across the North-West.

Network Rail officials have also set speed restrictions due to the strong winds and rail delays are expected.
