The town’s magistrates’ court was told Matthew Wignall (22) had a record, including offences of drunk and disorderly, but had not been in trouble for more than two years.

Wignall ended up back in court after urinating on the floor of the restaurant at 6-45am. He went quietly with the police when officers were called and ended up spending a day in the cells. The defendant was one of six out of nine defendants appearing in court in one morning for drink-fuelled offences, prompting prosecutor Mrs Alex Mann to say: ”There are an awful lot of people here today for alcohol offending in dry January.”

The defendant, of Reed Street, Burnley, admitted being drunk and disorderly in the St James’s Street restaurant on January 15th. He was fined £60, with £30 costs and a £20 victim surcharge.

Wignall, who was not represented by a solicitor, told the hearing he had had an argument with his mother and went out.

“I think I was just that drunk I didn’t know where the toilet were, to be honest with you.”
