Death of Barrowford businessman honoured by Queen

THE funeral of a businessman who had lived in Barrowford for 37 years – Mr Peter Brian Greenwood CBE – took place on Tuesday.

He and his wife Velma had lived at Rosehill House in Barrowford but last year had made a temporary move to Blackburn.

Mr Greenwood (71) was born in Burnley, but educated at King’s School, Cambridge. After leaving school, he joined his father’s family business, which became Greenwood Plant Hire. He was assisted for 33 years by his wife and brother Kenny.

In the early 1980s, Mr Greenwood became Pendle Conservative Association treasurer, then the Conservative North West Area treasurer. He was honoured with a CBE in 1993.

He was a past president of Nelson Rotary Club and was awarded the Rotary’s Paul Harris Fellowship in recognition of his service in the community.

His wife Velma said: “He could make do and mend anything, and enjoyed a woodworking course at Burnley College. Peter and I enjoyed hosting many charity events at out Rosehill home and gardens.”

As well as his wife he leaves daughter Amber, son David and granddaughter Jessica. On Tuesday his funeral took place at Accrington Crematorium.
