Head teacher Kate Thew was thrilled when she was given a share of daffodils grown by members of Cog Lane Residents’ Group.

The bulbs were in a batch of around 500 donated by Calico so they could be grown on and then handed out to schools and community centres in South West Burnley.

Delighted Mrs Thew shared the flowers around classrooms and at the reception area so all her youngsters could enjoy them.

Residents’ group member Norman Walsh and County Coun. Jeff Sumner delivered the spring bulbs to the school.

Said County Coun. Sumner: “The residents group received a donation of around 500 bulbs from Calico’s Alicia Folley to grow and hand out around schools and community centres around this area of Southwest Burnley, I understand that hundreds have already been delivered. Our intention next year is to deliver a batch of daffodils to every school in South West Burnley and incorporate as many community centres and care homes as possible.”

Looking ahead, bulb planter Mr Walsh said he was very happy how the project had developed.

“Councillor Sumner set our group up with a task to do and we achieved it,” he said. “Next year’s challenge will be a bit more difficult, but we are confident that we will succeed.”

The residents’ group would be grateful for donations of soil, bulbs and pots.
