Mr Backhouse and his wife, Brenda, were well known in Clitheroe, Whalley, Burnley and Padiham before making their home in Cyprus, where they worked for many years raising thousands of Euros to help make the hospice dream a reality.

The Archangel Michael Hospice, in Paphos, opened last June and Mr Backhouse died there in October, aged 67.
