Curry, cakes and dance on the agenda at thriving college's open night

Dance and drama students stage a special showcase at the open night at Blessed Trinity RC College in Burnley

Children and their parents considering the school in Omerod Road queued up outside for a highly successful open evening.

Food Technology students served up the goodies and there were also demonstations by pupils from the science department and and drama and dance pupils.

Year Nine students Archie Vickers, who collects World War One and Two memorabillia as his hobby brought along items from his collection. These included bullets, helmets and medals which he showed off in the history department.

Pianists Ashwin Stanly and Alexandria Mullard played for visitors in the music department.

Blessed Trinity was oversubscribed last year and celebrated in August as more of their pupils achieved top grades in English and maths in their GCSE’s than ever before.

Headteacher Richard Varey said: “It was great to see so many prospective pupils coming to look around our school.

“We are on a journey to being an outstanding school and our aim over the last few years has been to make sure the people of Burnley didn’t feel they had to go out of the town for a quality education.

“We, along with the other schools in the town, have achieved this.”

Blessed Trinity opened in September 2006, as part of the Building Schools for the Future programme. It was formed from the merger of St Theodore’s Boys and St Hilda’s Girls high schools.

Originally on split sites in the town the school moved into the new Â£24m building in 2010.

After a difficult period, OFSTED placed the school in special measures in 2011 but it exited these in 2013. It was rated good across the board in its last report in 2014.
