World Cup reveller arrested in Burnley street after drunken tirade court told

A drunken dad was arrested after a World Cup match when he was provoked by a man in the street, a court heard.

Burnley magistrates were told how Darren Bannister (50) had earlier had his car windows smashed.

He believed it was something to do with the man, who asked him: "Who needs car windows in this weather ?"

The Bench heard Bannister was seen by police at 9.30pm, was shouting and swearing and was arrested after he carried on using bad language.

Miss Cathryn Fell, defending Bannister, said police turned up at an incident which was finishing.

He had been watching the football, had a drink and then went to see his children. He had been provoked before the police arrived.

Miss Fell said the defendant had had his car windows smashed and the incident started after the comment about them was made.

Bannister, of Clare Street, Burnley, admitted being drunk and disorderly on Accrington Road, Burnley, on Saturday, July 7th.

He was fined £80, with £85 costs and a £30 victim surcharge.
