Woman who had not committed a crime for 12 years in court for theft from Burnley store

A thief with a record was in court for the first time since 2006

A thief helped herself to two electric toothbrushes, worth Â£216, from Boots, when she had no money, a court heard.

Michelle Smith (41) who had a problem with her benefits, tried to steal the brushes from the Burnley store but wasn't successful.

Smith, who had a record but had not broken the law since 2006, apologised for what she had done.

Mr Andrew Robinson, prosecuting, said a store detective saw Smith select the items, put them in two bags and walk out without paying. The goods were recovered.

Police attended, she was interviewed and said she wouldn't "get paid " for several days.

Mr Mark Williams, defending, said Smith was entitled to be treated as a person of good character.

The solicitor continued: " She had a problem with her benefits.

"She had not received any money and foolishly decided to try and steal the items.

"She apologises."

Smith, of Dall Street, Burnley, admitted theft on Friday, March 23rd. She was told to pay a total of £195, in fines, costs and a victim surcharge.
