Burnley magistrates heard how Arron Marshall Glover (22) was verbally abusive to Kelly Hodgson, took up a boxing stance and asked her: “Do you know who I am? I am Arron Glover,” during the midnight violence in the town. Her boyfriend intervened.

Glover blamed his actions on beer and told a probation officer that on a scale of one to 10 in drunkenness, he put himself as “10 and above”. He apologised in court. “I’m just willing to do whatever I need to do to make it up to the girl.”

The defendant, of Paythorne Avenue, Burnley, admitted assault by beating on May 7th. He has a previous conviction for assault. Glover, who has just set up his own power washing business, was given a community order with 60 hours unpaid work and must pay £85 costs and an £85 victim surcharge.

Mrs Tracy Yates, prosecuting, told the court the victim got in a taxi and the defendant also got in, from the opposite side. She and the driver asked him to get out, but Glover became aggressive and she told him to grow up and called him “gobby” and a “silly boy”.

Mrs Yates said the defendant carried on shouting, started to throw air punches and was still shouting at the victim as he walked backwards and she walked towards him. He then approached her and slapped her. The defendant then appeared to take up a boxing stance and punched her on the side of the face.

The defendant, who was not represented by a solicitor, told the court: “I know it’s not acceptable. She was shouting and abusive. I don’t think I slapped her. I think I nudged her. I didn’t mean what happened that night. I’m sorry.”
