A second woman, who was in a neighbour’s house upon the arrival of firefighters, is also beieved to have been taken to hospital with similar symptoms, and severe burns to her face and arms. Both women are believed to be in their 40s.
Watch manager Lee Cook said: “A joint police and fire investigation is being launched to ascertain the cause of the fire and the events leading up to it.
“There are currently conflicting stories as to how the lady sustained the burns and how the fire started.
“The fire has started in the rear lounge on the ground floor, and we believe the two casualties were taken to hospital.”
North West Ambulance Service confirmed they were called at 10-55pm, but could not confirm whether it was one or two casualties they conveyed to hospital.
