Taxi driver abused in ‘drunken quarrel’

A Burnley man has pleaded guilty to threatening a taxi driver in a late-night “drunken quarrel”, a court heard.

Stephen Redfern (33) admitted abusing cab driver Atif Mumtaz as he travelled in his vehicle, Burnley Crown Court was told.

Redfern, of Pine Street, and co-defendant Catherine Monks were asked to get out of the taxi but the driver was met with further abuse, the court heard.

Monks, of Hornby Street, was said to have left the taxi and encouraged Redfern to “sort him out”.

Redfern admitted affray before Burnley Crown Court and Monks admitted Section 4 public order offence.

Both defendants were granted bail but were given residence curfews and ordered not to go within 100m of Kings Taxi in Yorkshire Street.

The pair with be sentenced on May 12th.
