Burnley Crown Court came to a near halt on Monday afternoon when court staff walked out in an industrial dispute.

Clerks belonging to the PCS, the Public and Commerical Services Union, downed tools midway through the day’s business as part of a nationwide three-month civil service-wide campaign against Government-imposed cuts to pay, pensions, jobs and working conditions.

One jury considering a verdict was sent home for the day and two cases in which defendants were due to be sentenced had to be put off. They, and their legal representative, told to return another day.
