Officers called to reports of anti-social behaviour in Tunstill Square were targeted with fireworks as they were waiting for the fire service to extinguish a blaze that had been started in the street last night (November 5).

A video of the horrendous incident was taken by one of the officers on the scene, showing police having to take refuge inside their van. A 17-year-old boy was arrested and remained in custody as of last night.

However, police say as soon as the fire in Tunstill Square had been extinguished by firefighters, someone "thought it would be OK" to set a wheelie bin alight.

Officers have confirmed a man who is believed to be responsible for the bin fire has been arrested on suspicion of arson. He is currently in police custody for questioning.

A spokesman for Lancashire Police said: "Dedicated officers are currently out and about dealing with reports of firework anti-social behaviour in order of keeping the community safe.

"Whilst officers were awaiting for the fire service to extinguish a fire on Tunstill Square a group of individuals thought it would be appropriate to target the police with rockets.

"This will not be tolerated and officers will be conducting enquiries to locate those responsible."

In an updated statement issued at 9.45pm, police said: "Fire services have safely put out the fire on Tunstall Square however somebody thought it would be 'OK' to set another wheelie bin on fire as soon as the fire services left.

"Officers from the taskforce have located a male who is believed to be responsible who has been arrested on suspicion of arson and currently in custody.

"This kind of behaviour will not be tolerated and offenders will be dealt with."

Officers working in Hyndburn last night were also subjected to abuse from teenagers, with police posting a plea to parents to come and pick up their children up on their Facebook page.

It read: "Officers have been out in the Avenue Parade/Coppice area where we have been greeted by groups of kids who started to throw fireworks directed at police.

"If you know that your child is out and in this area, please can you consider collecting them."
