Armed police swooped on a quiet Burnley cul-de-sac over the weekend after claims two men brandishing a hand gun had stormed into one of the homes.

When specialist officers arrived at the property, in Loxley Gardens, Lowerhouse, at 10-30pm on Saturday they found no trace of the gunmen and the reports to be a hoax.

The street was sealed off with police tape while officers carried out a detailed search of the house and they are now keen to speak to the man who made the hoax call.

A police spokeswoman said: “We had a call from a guy about 10-30pm on Saturday reporting a couple of men had gone to the address and offered his son drugs.

“The caller said the men had followed him inside the house brandishing a hand gun.

“We attended the address but no such men were found.”

Officers from Lancashire Police’s armed response unit spent an hour at the scene and are appealing for anyone with information about the incident to contact them.

The spokeswoman added: “Inquiries are ongoing to try and trace this man. We reacted with the proportionate response. The person who was in the house when we attended wasn’t the person who made the call.”

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Lancashire Police on 101 or Crimestoppers, in confidence, on 0800 555 111.
