Police who searched a Burnley man’s possessions while questioning him for an unrelated offence found a small quantity of cannabis resin in a cigarette packet, the town’s magistrates’ court was told.

Martin Hughie Crawford (21), of Lisbon Drive, admitted possessing the drug and was given a conditional discharge for 12 months and ordered to pay £85 costs and a victim surcharge of £15.

Mrs Alex Mann (prosecuting) said Crawford had five previous convictions for similar offences.

Mr Mark Williams (defending) said the drug had been given to Crawford by a friend and was discovered while he was being spoken to on another matter which was not pursued any further.
