"This is the last thing the village needs on the back of an impending lockdown. The danger is that their actions could result in us losing one of the three cash points we have in the village, badly invonveniencing shoppers and pub-goers."

Police investigations are ongoing into the incident.

Sgt Kevin Day, of Clitheroe Police, said: "Shortly before 4am yesterday, an attempt was made to steal cash from an ATM outside the Co-Op on King Street, Whalley. The would-be thieves did not manage to take any cash, but they have caused considerable damage and inconvenience to locals who rely on the village cash machines. If anyone has information that they believe could assist with our investigation, we would ask that they call 101 and quote ref 0148 02/11/20."
