A FRESH trial has begun into the brutal murder of a Burnley man in a house in which his friend was also murdered.

An earlier trial into the murder of Mr James Atkinson (55) collapsed when a jury at Preston Crown Court could not decide whether he had been murdered by Kenneth Howson (26) of Williams Road, Burnley.

The brutal double killing of Mr Atkinson and his friend Mr Neil Gilmore (55) at a flat in Waddington Avenue, Brunshaw, sent shockwaves through the town when their savagely beaten bodies were discovered on October 5th last year.

Earlier this year, Howson and Daniel Waddington (23) were convicted of the murder of Mr Gilmore who had extended the hand of friendship to Mr Atkinson by allowing him to stay at his flat while was homeless.

Waddington was also found guilty of Mr Atkinson’s murder, but a jury in March was unable to reach a verdict on that charge regarding Howson.

A new trial started on Wednesday at Preston Crown Court and is expected to last a week.
