Nelson man who targetted the elderly is jailed for four years

A MAN who targeted an elderly woman at her home in Burnley has been jailed for four years.

Michael Simpson (44) of Clover Hill Road, Nelson appeared before Burnley Crown Court on Tuesday where he pleaded guilty to burglary and possession of drugs.

Simpson approached an 83-year-old woman at her home on Briercliffe Road around 11 a.m. on August 13th.

He demanded money for work he claimed had been carried out on her roof but left when her son arrived at the address.

He was arrested after diligent enquiries by Pennine Division’s Targeted Crime Team.

Speaking after sentencing Det. Insp. Martin Melvin said: “Simpson deliberately targeted an elderly and vulnerable woman at her home and I am satisfied with the sentence.

“I advise residents to be extra vigilant when answering their door to anyone. If you don’t know the person, or are not expecting them, do not let them in. If in doubt contact the police.”
