Officers are in the early stages of their enquiries and are keen to trace any witnesses.

They are appealing for anyone who saw what happened or who has any dashcam or CCTV to get in touch.

Police believe the discharge of the firearm followed an altercation on the street and may be linked to an incident a short earlier at the nearby Morrisons Daily store on Colne Road.

Detective Chief Superintendent Ian Whitehead said: “This is an extremely serious incident and the victim is very lucky to have survived the attack.
