Man in court over Padiham Christmas Day sword alert


A man was arrested after allegedly brandishing a sword in a Padiham street on Christmas Day.

Armed police were called in after reports of a man armed with a bladed weapon in Palmerston Street on December 25th.

A man was detained by armed response team officers nearby at 11-20am following 999 calls on Christmas morning.

John Owens (56) of Park Avenue, Burnley, was charged with possession of a bladed article in a public place.

He was also charged with criminal damage and a further count of using threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour with intent to cause fear of unlawful violence.

He remanded by police following the incident and had been due to appear before Blackburn Magistrates’ Court yesterday.
