Brierfield Methodist Church, which has seen its income fall after having been closed due to the pandemic over the past nine months, was dealt another blow recently when lead was stolen from the listed building, damaging over 300 rooftop tiles.

Members of the church, founded in 1862, have been fund-raising for the last 25 years to keep the listed building in good condition, were left devastated after the latest setback until next-door neighbours Townson Butchers stepped in to help.

Church member Anne Dixon said: "Our building is listed and is always in need of some work, hence our fund-raising over the past 25 years.

"As was to be expected, our usual income completely dried up, and our collection figures plummeted due to not being able to meet. We have tried to raise funds in smaller ways, but at this time of year we would normally be holding our Christmas market.

"Gladly we were able to re-open last Sunday but for worship only, so obviously this year the Christmas Market cannot take place within the building.

"I approached I. Townson and Son butchers, which is next door to church, to see if they could help. They have very kindly let us put a table in their shop, and our church ladies are baking and making things to sell.

"This is a very kind gesture and an example of good neighbourliness which we really do appreciate. We would like to thank Townsons for their support during this difficult time. We encourage people as they shop to look around at our table.

"Unfortunately, during the pandemic the lead from our church roof was stolen from the buildings around the rear, damaging over 300 rooftop tiles. As this was historic lead and not Smartwater marked, we were unable to claim for the damage on our insurance.

"Inside the building the water ingress has also taken its toll. It's vital that we can raise funds to enable us to put the heating on longer to dry out the damage now the repairs are completed."
