Lancashire man, 19, charged after police officer is struck down in alleged hit and run

A man has been charged after a police officer was injured in an alleged hit and run in Lancashire.

Rahman Hussain, 19, of Halifax Road, Nelson, was arrested after an officer was struck by a car in Southfield Street, Nelson on Saturday (April 4).

Lancashire Police said the officer was knocked down and injured whilst trying to stop a "suspicious vehicle", allegedly driven by Hussain.

Following the collision, the force said officers pursued the car through the streets of Nelson before the driver was stopped and detained a short time later.

He has since been arrested and charged with a number of offences, including dangerous driving, assault and possession of Class B drugs.

Hussain will appear at Burnley Magistrates' Court' today (Monday, April 6).

The officer has sustained minor injuries.

A police spokesman said: "On Saturday, April 4, Task Force had been on mobile patrol around the Southfield Street area of Nelson when they had observed a suspicious vehicle.

"Officers made attempts to speak with the driver who has then driven their vehicle at an officer who has been knocked to the ground.

"A short time later both the driver and vehicle have been located and offender arrested.

"On arrest, the offender was also found in possession of a quantity of drugs and upon further inspection of the vehicle, checks revealed that the vehicle in question had been displaying false plates.

"Thankfully we can say that officer is safe and well and has sustained minor injuries as a result.

"The crown prosecution have been consulted and Rahman Hussain, 19, of Halifax Road, Nelson, has been charged with the following offences;

- Assault a person thereby occasioning them actual bodily harm

- Possess a controlled drug of Class B

- Drive a motor vehicle dangerously

- Use a motor vehicle on a road / public place without third party insurance

- Drive a motor vehicle otherwise than in accordance with a licence - endorsable offence
