Immigration officials swoop on Burnley bridegroom’s wedding

A Burnley bridegroom is set to be deported after police swooped on his wedding ceremony.

The 28-year-old was detained just minutes before he was set to be married at Burnley Register Office.

The Pakistani national is believed to have been preparing to wed a Polish woman when Home Office immigration enforcement officers turned up at the Todmorden Road venue on Thursday.

Home Office officials acted on intelligence to detain the man who had overstayed his visa. He is now detained pending his removal from the UK.

The swoop came as part of a nationwide crackdown on illegal immigrants which saw more than 130 people detained.
