Detectives in Burnley have launched an investigation following an armed robbery at a jeweller’s store.

The incident happened on Saturday, February 19th, at the shop on Brougham Street just after 4 p.m.

Someone dressed in a burka rang the bell of the shop and once the shop owner opened the door, three men entered the store armed with a gun and baseball bats.

They smashed a number of glass display cabinets and stole various items of jewellery. The shop owner was able to lock himself in the back office so was not hurt, but he has been left very shaken following the ordeal.

It is not clear at this time whether it was a man or a woman who was wearing the burka. The other three men were all dressed in dark clothes and had their faces covered. They then fled the scene in what is believed to have been an old fashioned Mercedes in a beige or light gold colour.

Det. Insp. Simon Cheyte from Burnley CID said: “I would appeal for anyone who was in the area at the time and witnessed the incident or anything suspicious to come forward and contact us.

“We believe that the car used to flee the scene was in the area prior to the robbery taking place. Did anyone see the vehicle earlier in the afternoon?

“I would also like to hear from people who have perhaps been offered jewellery since Saturday night. It is very important that we catch the people responsible.”

Anyone with information is asked to call Burnley CID on 01282 425001 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
