Burnley firefighters have slammed arsonists who torched buildings, vehicles and rubbish in the same area of town in the early hours of this morning.

Crews were called to the rear of Palatine Square at 3 a.m. where a garage containing a car had been set alight.

Half-an-hour later they received reports of a van on fire in nearby Pritchard Street and, at 4-30 a.m. they were called to a house in Grange Street, also in the same area of town, where yobs had set fire to the front door. Twenty-five minutes later they were called to the same street to put out a fire in a wheelie bin.

Firefighters from Nelson, Accrington and Padiham were called in to provide cover as crews spent two hours tackling the garage blaze.

Watch manager Neil Ashworth, from Burnley fire station, warned residents not to panic and said a “vigourous investigation” would be carried out in conjunction with the police.

He urged homeowners to keep sheds, garages and back yards locked.
