A computer hacker has sent out fake emails from former Burnley MP Peter Pike claiming he was the victim of a mugging in Paris.

The former Labour MP, a well-known face in the town for his work with homeless charity Emmaus, said he was aware of the scam.

The Burnley Express and several people on Mr Pike’s mailing list received an email titled “Urgent Help!” asking for a loan of £1,350.

The email read: “I’m writing with tears in my eyes, my family and I came to Paris for a short vacation unfortunately we were mugged at the park of the hotel we stayed, all cash credit cards and mobile were stolen...”

Mr Pike said: “A number of friends called me after receiving this email. It is obviously a scam. Sadly this kind of thing happens on the internet. People should never hand money over without checking the validity.”
