Three fire engines were called out to tackle a deliberate fire at a former industrial site.

A large amount of thick black smoke could be seen for miles billowing from the former Hepworth site in Manchester Road, Hapton, at around 3-20pm on Wednesday.

On arrival, firefighters found around 20 sqm. of commercial waste including plastics, wood, plaster board and paper boarding was well alight.

Crew manager Lee Garnett said: “Three fire engines were mobilised due to the amount of smoke, two from Burnley and one from Padiham.

“That means these valuable resources were unavailable for other more important calls for approximately two hours, due to this deliberate act.

“Deliberate fires can cost lives.

“They also put a strain on fire service resources that may be required elsewhere.

“High pressure hose reels and small tools were used to extinguish the waste.”
