A father-of-two stole 27 mattresses worth £2,000 from a building being converted into student accommodation to buy his children birthday presents, a court heard.

Matthew Lord (27) who struck with three others, was arrested at the former Circulation Club on Holmes Street, Burnley, where he was jumping off some scaffolding.

The town’s magistrates were told how 52 mattresses were stolen from the site. The 27 taken by Lord were still in their packaging and were recovered.

The defendant, of Eliza Street, Burnley, admitted burglary to the value of £2,200 on September 30th.

He was given four months in custody, suspended for 12 months, with a 15 day rehabilitation activity requirement. The defendant must pay £100 compensation, £85 costs, an £80 victim surcharge and a £180 criminal courts charge.
